Lightship "Nantucket" - LV112 Click image to see full-size version. |
Lightship "Nantucket"- LV-112 is the largest lightship ever built, and resides in Boston. She was the longest-serving lightship on the Nantucket Shoals. In this image, on the left side, there is a 3-story building behind the dock. There is a sign on the roof that reads, "U.S.Lighthouse Service". (This might be the headquarters building for that service, but it looks like an apartment building. There looks to be a clothesline with light-colored clothes hanging from it towards the right end of the building. Maybe this is where the lighthouse crews lived when off-duty.) On the dock there are stacks of barrels on their sides, and many different kinds of buoys. Looking at the bow of the ship, there is the starboard "mushroom anchor". The b&w photo, of course, doesn't show the color of the hull, but from the shading of it, I can see that it would be red, like the many pictures I have seen while Googling for info about it. I also used the placement of the lettering on the hull, and where the portholes appear, to determine which "version" of this ship the image is about. There is a sailor standing on the roof of the pilot house. He looks to be wearing a pea coat and sailor cap (United States "dixie cup" hat). Just forward of the pilot house, I can make out the large ship's signal bell hanging in its framework on the deck.
